The Funniest Man Who Ever Lived? # 5-Godfrey Cambridge

  1. Albums, books, movies -- it breaks our heart that kids today don't know the name Godfrey Cambridge. Do people even know who Chester Himes is? And that Godfrey played Gravedigger Jones? Is "Blind Man with a Pistol" even in print anymore?

  2. To answer your questions--when I was still working (up til 2009), we had some Chester Himes at my bookstore.

And no, I doubt even people old enough to remember him will really recall Cambridge that much but he was the first African American comic I recall ever seeing and he was a hoot! Even more-so in things like THE PRESIDENT'S ANALYST and WATERMELON MAN..

  3. He was brilliant. Brought the house down on every talk show he ever graced and we can only wish he made more movies (or for that matter, that he was still around to make them). What a voice... What a mind... Thanks for posting these...

  4. I thought "Cotton Comes to Harlem" and "Come Back Charleston Blue" were two of the funniest movies I ever saw. Godfrey Cambridge was an actor and a comic who should be remembered, but only seems to be when TCM shows one of his movies.
