Cartoonist Mel Graff, at the time the artist on SECRET AGENT X-9, tackled this radio mag assignment of drawing what he THINKS popular disc jockeys looked like. Interesting to note the MAD look of the work when one considers that MAD was still half a decade away!
What's it from, Steve? What a find!
ReplyDeleteFeel free to add an n.
ReplyDeleteThis is from the June, 1949 issue of RADIO BEST, found in one of the online archives a few years back. Al Jolson and Ruby Keeler are on the cover.
ReplyDeleteDid you get the other one or was it placed there since? They also have the May issue, with another installment. And sice it is a 'department' there may have been more that year. I would place it here, but is is spread over two pages and needs to be clipped and assembled. Will do so soon.
ReplyDeleteDave Garroway, of course, would gain greater fame in a few years as the host of the "Today" show.
ReplyDeleteHoward Reig would have a long career at NBC, becoming that network's last staff announcer, still introducing the Nightly News when he retired around 2006.
I will be showing the other one and this one on my blog next Saturday.
